22/09/2003 INTERVIEWING MR. JUAN JOSÉ IGLESIAS VARELA PROJECT MANAGER OF IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA Y CONSULTORÍA ![]() ![]() APLEIN Ingenieros has supplied a 100 inch, 2 x 1 projection wall screen for the Combined Cycle Power Station of Castejón, which has T.I. triple chip DLP technology. We interviewed Juan José Iglesias Varela, Project Manager of Iberdrola Ingeniería y Consultoría SA, for the Combined Cycle Power Station of Castejón (Navarra), property of Fuerzas Eléctricas de Navarra SA (Iberdrola Group). The start-up of the combined cycle power stations in Castellón and Castejón “strengthens Iberdrola’s firm commitment with the 2002-2011 energy planning document approved by the government”. How does the installation of the projection screen in the control room help in achieving this goal? The use of high-performance projection screens is of great help in the tasks of plant operation, as well as at the time of putting the installation into service. During this period, the wall screen becomes the point where all participants in the project converge looking for the most up-to-date information. One of the key factors in the success of any major project is the correct transmission of the available information to all participants. In the CMDS of Iberdrola in Castellón, a rear projection system in T.I. Triple Chip DLP technology was installed last year. Did the experience of Iberdrola Castellón in operation, reliability and maintenance influence your opting for this technology? The experience gained in Castellón was indeed decisive. A fundamental aspect for the selection of wall screens is high visualization quality. Experience with systems of poorer quality show that wall screens can become mere decorative objects, which the personnel don’t use. Of course, reliability and maintenance are also appraised in the system selection process, to identify the most economical solution in the long term. What is the main function of the control room of the Castejón CC Plant? From the control room of the plant it is possible to carry out supervision and control of the entire installation, both for its main items of equipment, gas and steam turbines, heat recovery steam generator and alternator, and for the remaining units and auxiliary systems. The control room is the neuralgic / intelligent centre, with operations staff 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Could you tell us what improvements have been obtained from installing this wall screen in the operations room? Data are being received continuously in the control room, they are analysed and decisions are taken, many of which have to be decided upon in seconds. For this reason it is vital to have all the information in the most user-friendly manner possible. The wall screens greatly facilitate the transmission of information, and assist greatly in decision-taking by speeding up discussions on the different topics. They also improve staff training by permitting the tracking of the installation in a straightforward way, free from interference. Another aspect, no less important, is the great help they provide for making visits to the plant more amenable. By managing to have personnel from both the public authority and other types of entity and institution can understand and verify the running and operation of electricity generating plants, in a straightforward manner, through being incorporated briefly into the plant operation team, is a great achievement in which the high performance wall screens play an important part. The wall screens in question greatly facilitate the integration of visitors with the plant. Do you consider it would be interesting to install rear projection systems with the same technology and of the same size in all combined cycle power stations, to obtain uniformity of technology in all of them? I think that the wall screen sizes selected both for Castellón (CMDS) and for Castejón are appropriate. The size has to be defined in terms of the size of the control room, distance from the operations staff, etc., but in general the screens ought not to be less than 80”. The technology selected, as already mentioned, has to guarantee a high picture quality combined, of course, with operational simplicity, high reliability and economical maintenance, which at the moment is found in the T.I. Triple Chip DLP technology that Aplein has installed. More news |
