INTERVIEW WITH MR JUAN PUERTAS
As
part of the Madrid-Barajas Airport extension, the ABHS (Automatic
Baggage Handling System) control room has been reformed. APLEIN
Ingenieros, in collaboration with PAGE, have supplied and installed
a backprojection wall in the AENA ABHS Control room. We interviewed
Mr Juan Puertas, AENA ABHS engineer, who provide us with further
information with respect to this project.
What importance has the ABHS control
room within the AENA security systems?
The ABHS control room monitors the entire baggage handling process
for the Madrid/Barajas Airport. Since this is a critical system
in airport operation, reaction time when faced with any possible
incidents is crucial to avoiding baggage remaining on the ground.
From the ABHS control room all types of alarms with regards to system
problems are monitored and the whole process is tracked using a
CCTV system.
Could you explain what operational
improvements have been obtained with this reorganisation of space
in the ABHS control room?
The rationalisation of space provides the
operational personnel with better control of all the operating parameters,
together with more convenient working conditions than in stations
such as those of controllers where the personnel have to remain
at their posts during the entire shift, is very important. Moreover,
the new projection equipment permits fast monitoring of operational
parameters, together with excellent versatility in the type of monitored
information which adapts to the various circumstances.
With regards to the application of new
technologies, is the automatic baggage handling system security
increased?
It really increases system reliability and
reaction times, which permit efficient operation to be maintained
in the case of certain type of contingencies.
What specific control room operational
advantages have resulted from the installation of the projection
wall?
It allows simultaneous control of the two
classification areas which, in the case of contingencies, permits
several persons to analyse the information in order to establish
the best solution for each individual set of circumstances. It also
allows the ABHS Manager to make decisions in real-time based on
the information provided by the projection wall.
